Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (PgDip)

The Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (PgDip) is a part-time, two-year program accredited by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Overview

This program is designed for professionals working in mental health, such as mental health nurses, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers. It aims to help participants develop further competence in high-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and work towards individual practitioner accreditation with the BABCP.

Course Structure

The Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) consists of specialist supervision sessions commencing in September. The program is divided into two years, with the following core modules:

Year One

• The Fundamentals of CBT (PST401, 20 credits)
• CBT for Specific Disorders (PST402, 40 credits)

Year Two

• CBT Clinical Skills (PST603, 30 credits)
• CBT Metacompetences (PST604, 30 credits)

Learning and Assessment

• Taught through supervision sessions offered by BABCP-accredited practitioners, including live supervision using therapy recordings
• Access to online program materials and resources via Learning Central and Cardiff University library facilities
• Assessment via a combination of written assignments and practical assessment

Admission Criteria

To be considered for this program, applicants must:

• Have an honors degree in a relevant subject area or an equivalent international degree
• Provide evidence of a core profession in mental health or a Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (KSA) portfolio
• Work (paid or unpaid) in the UK and be able to practice individual CBT with clients experiencing anxiety and depression
• Have a manager and a clinical supervisor
• Submit a personal statement evidencing personal suitability, interest, and commitment to CBT
• Obtain student membership of the BABCP
• Provide evidence of GCSE English language grade C/4 or an acceptable alternative

Tuition Fees

• For home status: £4,500 per year
• For overseas status: This course does not currently accept students from outside the UK/EU

Funding

Financial support may be available to individuals who meet certain criteria. Postgraduate loans may also be applicable for master's degree study starting in September 2026 or later.

Career Prospects

Graduates will have evidence of skills in Cognitive Behavioural Therapies recognized by the BABCP, which can be used in various employment fields. To apply for accreditation, graduates need a BABCP-recognized professional background in mental health or equivalent training and experience.
