Spanish Higher Advanced Stage G
Course Description
This course will enable students to expand their oral, aural, and written language skills in order to develop a detailed knowledge and effective understanding of the structures, registers, and linguistic principles required to analyze and manipulate the Spanish language.
Course Objectives
Students will acquire an effective operational proficiency in Spanish, allowing for fluent and spontaneous communication. The emphasis of the course is on speaking, and students will have ample opportunity to practice their conversational skills through pair-work and group exercises.
Target Audience
This course is designed for students who have an excellent working command of Spanish and use it on a regular basis, equivalent to six years of part-time study and/or Advanced Spanish Stage F. This level will enhance near-native language skills.
Learning and Teaching
The course will cover a wide range of topics, adapted to students' interests, using authentic materials such as Spanish newspapers, magazines, video documentaries, and audio tapes relating to current affairs and literary topics. Examples of topics to be covered include:
- Spanish speaking countries
- Regional differences in Spain
- Historical aspects of Spain/Latin America in the 20th century
- Socio-economic aspects
- The city versus the countryside in Spain and Latin America
- Working in Spain
- Social issues
- The family
- Social aspects
- Social trends
- Socializing
- Health and science issues
- Traveling
- Technology
- Current political, social, and economic topics
- Spanish and Latin American films
- Translations from English into Spanish grammar
- Revision of grammar as needed
Coursework and Assessment
The assessment of this course is divided into four parts to assess each of the following skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It is designed to enhance what students have learned during the course. Students are recommended to spend time between lessons revising and practicing what has been done in class.
