Overview

The Music (BMus) program at Cardiff University is a three-year full-time degree that offers in-depth study in music, allowing students to specialize in their area of interest. The program provides a strong foundation in music theory, analysis, and performance, as well as opportunities for composition, musicology, and ethnomusicology.

Subject Area: Music

The program is based in the School of Music, which offers a wide range of musical repertoires and traditions. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of the school-led core ensembles, including the Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Symphony Orchestra, and others.

Entry Requirements

The typical offers for the BMus program are:

• AAB-BBB at A-level, including Music
• 34-31 overall or 666-665 in 3 HL subjects at International Baccalaureate, including grade 5 in HL Music
• DDD-DDM in a BTEC Extended Diploma in Music
• Other qualifications, such as the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales, are also accepted

Students without an A-level in Music or HL Music will be considered on a case-by-case basis to determine appropriate levels of music performance and theory skills.

English Language Requirements

The English language requirements for the program are:

• GCSE English Language or Welsh Language at grade C/4 or equivalent
• IELTS (academic) at least 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill
• TOEFL iBT at least 90 overall with a minimum of 17 for writing, 17 for listening, 18 for reading, and 20 for speaking
• PTE Academic at least 69 overall with a minimum of 59 in all communicative skills
• Trinity ISE II/III at least two Distinctions and two Merits

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the BMus program are:

• ｣9,535 per year for home students
• ｣24,700 per year for overseas students

Course Structure

The program is a three-year full-time degree, consisting of 120 credits per year. The course structure includes:

• Year 1: Core modules in music theory and analysis, as well as elective modules in composition, performance, and musicology
• Year 2: Modules in analytical and critical skills, composition and production, practical musicianship, and musicology and placement
• Year 3: Modules in research-led teaching, as well as the opportunity to study up to two major project modules

Learning and Assessment

The program uses a range of teaching and learning styles, including lectures, small-group seminars and workshops, individual tutorials, ensemble instrumental tuition, rehearsals, and independent study. Assessment methods vary from module to module and may include essay assignments, presentations, extended projects, performances, and written exams.

Careers and Placements

The skills developed within the BMus program help students progress to a wide range of careers, both within and beyond the music profession. Graduate careers include musician, teacher, producer, arts administrator, and music librarian. The program also offers opportunities for placements and work experience in the music industry.
