Program Overview


Calibration Course in the Use of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment

The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is a mandatory requirement for undertaking orthodontic treatment within the NHS in England and Wales. This course enables participants to record the IOTN with minimal variation.


Course Overview

This course is the only accredited course in the UK and has been running for over 30 years with consistent positive feedback from participants. The course is intended to train healthcare professionals in the use of the IOTN in respect to assessing orthodontic treatment need and assessing orthodontic treatment outcomes.

What you'll learn

  • To highlight the benefit of using an objective measure to assess orthodontic treatment need
  • To be aware of the systematic approach (grading and procedures) to record both components of IOTN, Aesthetic (AC) and Dental Health (DHC)

  • To understand the concept of prioritizing orthodontic treatment need
  • To be able to correctly identify and classify treatment need in terms of deviant occlusal trait and grade
  • To be calibrated in the use of both components of the IOTN

Teaching and Useful Information

Course materials (course book and video materials) will be sent 2 weeks before the course. Participants will be required to watch videos and score intra-oral images in respect to the AC of IOTN. Small group teaching will be undertaken on the day of the course.
