Introduction to Criminology and Social Policy (BSc)
The Criminology and Social Policy (BSc) program is a three-year, full-time course that combines the study of criminology and social policy within an interdisciplinary social sciences context. Entry Requirements
- A level: ABB-BBC
- International Baccalaureate: 32-30 overall or 665-655 in 3 HL subjects
- Baccalaureate Wales: Accepted in lieu of one A-Level (at the grades listed above), excluding any specified subjects
- GCSE and other essential requirements:
- English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade C/4 or an equivalent
- Not accepted: Critical Thinking, General Studies, Citizenship Studies, or other similar equivalent subjects
- English language requirements:
- GCSE: Grade C or grade 4 in GCSE English Language
- IELTS (academic): At least 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill
- TOEFL iBT: At least 90 overall with a minimum of 17 for writing, 17 for listening, 18 for reading, and 20 for speaking
- PTE Academic: At least 69 overall with a minimum of 59 in all communicative skills
- Trinity ISE II/III: II: at least two Distinctions and two Merits; III: at least a Pass in all components
Course Structure
The program consists of 120 credits per year, with the final degree classification based on the grades achieved in years two and three.
- Year one: Six compulsory 20-credit modules designed to introduce students to key ideas and research in criminology and social policy
- Year two: Five core 20-credit modules and one optional 20-credit module
- Year three: 40 credits from the criminology portfolio, 40 credits from the social policy portfolio, and a 40-credit dissertation
Learning and Assessment
Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, independent study, and self-directed learning. Assessment formats include individual and group assignments, coursework, presentations, and exams. Feedback is provided on assessments to help students reflect on their level of attainment.
Careers and Placements
The program encourages students to think about life beyond university, offering support to give them a competitive advantage on graduating. Placement or study abroad opportunities are available in the third year, extending the program to four years.
