Program Overview


Bachelor of Nursing (Child) (BN)

The Bachelor of Nursing (Child) (BN) program is a three-year, full-time course that provides students with the skills and knowledge to become a registered nurse. The program is validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and offers students the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives.

Entry Requirements

We accept a combination of A-levels and other qualifications, as well as equivalent international qualifications subject to entry requirements. Typical offers are as follows:


  • A level: BBB-BBC
  • Extended/International Project Qualification: Applicants with grade A in the EPQ/IPQ will typically receive an offer one grade lower than the standard offer.
  • International Baccalaureate: 31-30 overall or 665-655 in 3 HL subjects.
  • Baccalaureate Wales: From September 2023, there will be a new qualification called the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (level 3).
  • GCSE and other essential requirements: You must have or be working towards English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade B/6 or an equivalent, and four GCSEs at grade C/4 including Maths, and one science (from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), or equivalent qualifications.
  • Personal statement: You must supply a personal statement that is relevant to the profession.
  • DBS check: You will be required to complete a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check if your application is successful.

Course Structure

This is a three-year, full-time program. Each academic year is divided into two semesters; Autumn and Spring. The program is structured using a spiral curriculum model, with key subject-specific topics and clinical practice introduced in year one and then spiraling through each year.


Year One

There are four compulsory modules in year one and two clinical practice placements. The modules will either be delivered over one semester or two semesters each year.


  • Core modules for year one:
    • Healthy children in society (HC1239, 30 credits)
    • Assessing needs and planning health care of children (HC1240, 30 credits)
    • Becoming an accountable professional (HC1243, 30 credits)
    • Applied sciences and health promotion in nursing (HC1244, 30 credits)

Year Two

There are four compulsory modules in year two and three clinical practice placements. The modules will either be delivered over one semester or two semesters each year.


  • Core modules for year two:
    • Critical evaluation of evidence-based care (HC2237, 30 credits)
    • Global health nursing (HC2238, 30 credits)
    • Co-ordinating care of children in diverse environments (HC2241, 30 credits)
    • Assessing and planning care of children with altered health (HC2242, 30 credits)

Year Three

There are four compulsory modules in year three and two clinical practice placements. The modules will either be delivered over one semester or two semesters each year. The last practice learning opportunity in the program is 14 weeks, and this is where a sign-off mentor will make a judgment about the students' achievements of the required competencies for safe and effective entry to the NMC register.


  • Core modules for year three:
    • Critical evaluation of evidence for service improvement (HC3313, 40 credits)
    • Assessing and planning care of children with complex altered health (HC3317, 30 credits)
    • Managing interventions and therapeutic care in children's nursing (HC3318, 20 credits)
    • Quality, safety and decision making in children's nursing care (HC3319, 30 credits)

  • Formative assessment and feedback are designed to support your learning and to assist you in identifying your own strengths and areas for development.
  • Summative assessment is formally marked and therefore contributes to progression or degree classification decisions.

Children's nursing is a challenging and rewarding career choice, and on qualification, it is possible to work in a wide range of healthcare settings both in the United Kingdom and abroad.


  • Career prospects: Children's nurses are usually part of multidisciplinary teams and can work in hospitals, day care centers, child health clinics, child's home, or hospice.
  • Potential employers: Various health boards and NHS Trusts, international health services, and higher education institutions.
