Program Overview
Mathematics (MMath)
The Mathematics (MMath) degree is a four-year full-time program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of mathematical techniques and their applications. The program is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and is suitable for students who wish to pursue a career in mathematics or a related field.
Why Study This Course
The MMath degree is ideal for students who want to gain a competitive edge in the employment market or prepare for a research career. The program provides excellent facilities, including a new home for the School of Mathematics, Abacws, which features innovative teaching areas and a simulated Trading Room for financial mathematics.
Course Structure
The program is divided into four years, with a carefully chosen balance of core and optional modules. In Year One, students study foundation areas of Calculus, Algebra, Analysis, Computing, and Probability. In Year Two, students continue to build foundation knowledge in Pure and Applied Mathematics, with a greater choice of optional modules. In Year Three, students take advanced modules, allowing them to focus on topics of particular interest. In Year Four, students undertake a major piece of project work, worth 40 credits, in which they develop presentation and communication skills and apply mathematical skills to a research topic of their choice.
