Programme Content

In the Latin program, students will study the written legacy of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire, especially in the works of Roman authors, up to the end of antiquity. The study and research of language and literature will include their requirements and after-effects, Roman history, art, philosophy, and the history of religion and culture. Students will learn to understand general and specialized problems of Latin language and literature and to contribute to their solution.

Structure

The teacher training program at the University of Jena is completed with the First State Examination. The standard period of study is ten semesters, during which various types of courses (e.g., seminars, lectures, or tutorials) are offered for the individual modules. The teacher training program is based on the Jena model, which is characterized by a five-month school placement semester in the fifth or sixth semester. As a future teacher, students will study two subjects on an equal footing at the University of Jena and round off their pedagogical profile with an accompanying Educational Science program. A total of 300 credit points (ECTS) must be completed.

Students will receive intensive didactic training and good practical preparation for the profession of Latin teacher.

Career Opportunities

• General Education: The typical route into school practice is via the preparatory service (traineeship). In this phase, students will further develop their practical teaching skills on the basis of their degree.
• Adult Education: Outside of the school system, there are opportunities for students to work as teachers in the subject area of adult education.

Admission Requirements

• University entrance qualification: A university entrance qualification, such as a general secondary school leaving certificate, is required for admission onto the study program.
• Language requirements: Latinum, Graecum; deadline until AN Module Lat 600 (Praxissem.). Missing language skills can be made up during the course of study at the FSU Language Center.
• Initial internship: In Jena, the teacher training course includes an introductory internship lasting 240 hours. Students should reflect on their educational experience in dealing with children and young people in order to review their career aspirations and make a conscious decision.
