Introduction to the Law Program

The Law program at the University of Jena is designed for students interested in understanding the German legal system and its laws. The program focuses on three areas: Civil Law, Public Law, and Criminal Law. Students will learn how to interpret and apply legal texts, develop their powers of reasoning and advocacy, and improve their language proficiency and analytical thinking skills.

Programme Content

The Law program is divided into foundation studies and advanced studies. Foundation studies cover the basics of law, including Civil Law, Public Law, and Criminal Law. Advanced studies allow students to specialize in one of the following areas:

• Fundamentals of Law and Legal Studies
• German and European Business Law
• German and European Labour and Social Law
• German and European Public Law
• Criminology
• International Law
• Administration of Civil Justice and Contract Drafting

Structure

The program consists of 10 semesters, with the first 7 semesters focusing on foundation studies and advanced studies. The last 3 semesters are dedicated to exam preparation. The program culminates in the first legal examination, which is conducted by the Free State of Thuringia.

Admission Requirements

• University entrance qualification: A general secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent is required for admission.
• Language requirements: Knowledge of Latin is an advantage, but not required.
• Additional requirements: Fun in using the German language, a good general education, an interest in politics, government, and society, analytical thinking skills, a strong capacity for learning, and stamina and dedication.
