Programme Content
In the Teacher Training Programme in English, students acquire basic knowledge and methodological skills in the subject areas of English and American Studies, English literature, language practice, and English didactics. Central subjects include the scientific description and analysis of the English language, the scientific examination of the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world (with a focus on Great Britain and North America), as well as the didactic teaching of the English language and its cultural area to children and young people.
Structure
The teacher training programme is completed with the First State Examination. The standard period of study is ten semesters, during which various types of courses (e.g., seminars, lectures, or tutorials) are offered for the individual modules. The programme is based on the Jena model, characterized by a five-month school placement semester in the fifth or sixth semester. As a future teacher, students study two subjects on an equal footing at the University of Jena and round off their pedagogical profile with an accompanying Educational Science programme. A total of 300 credit points (ECTS) must be earned.
Why Study in Jena?
- The Institute of English and American Studies offers a study programme that leaves room for individual specialization within its generalist training profile.
- The course integrates current approaches from internal research and teaching as well as from other disciplines.
- Classes are held almost exclusively in English.
- One or two semesters abroad in an English-speaking country are recommended.
Career Opportunities
- General Education: The typical route into school practice is via the preparatory service (traineeship).
- Adult Education: Opportunities exist to work as a teacher in adult education outside the school system.
Admission Requirements
- University entrance qualification (such as a general secondary school leaving certificate) is required for admission.
- An initial internship lasting 240 hours is part of the teacher training course.
