Fibres and Material Practices (BFA)
The Fibres and Material Practices program is designed for students interested in the technical and creative potential of the textile arts. This program encourages new ways of thinking, drawing from a rich heritage of materials and processes, and considering current issues of sustainability, labor, and craft.
Program Overview
The program allows for a rigorous and comprehensive study of the technical, conceptual, and creative aspects of current fibres practices. Students draw on diverse cultural or social research and a rich history of textile traditions to produce critically engaged artworks that use interdisciplinary, social, relational, and performance elements.
Program Structure
A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree takes a minimum of three or four years (90 120 credits) of full-time study, depending on the academic background. The program includes:
- Small classes promoting personal expression and critical discussion
- An open and inclusive environment that encourages interdisciplinary approaches
- Freedom to pursue thematic and material interests
- Independent study at the advanced level
- Professional internships and other opportunities to enhance technical expertise
Program Highlights
- Interdisciplinarity is encouraged, as well as exploration of current issues such as sustainability, cultural representation, labor, and craft, and new technologies.
- Applicants are not required to have experience with textile processes; introductory courses cover fundamental processes.
Admission Criteria
This program is only available for Fall admission. The minimum cut-off averages and course requirements include:
- Quebec CEGEP: DEC
- High School: C+
- International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma: 26
- International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (CP): 4.3/7
- Baccalauréat français: 11
- British system of education (GCE): At least two A-level exams CD
- University Transfers (internal/external): C
Additional Requirements for Admission
Applicants must submit:
- Letter of Intent
- Portfolio
The portfolio should contain a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 20 items, including:
- Drawings
- Paintings
- Prints
- Collage and other mixed media work
- Sculpture
- Ceramics
- Fibres work
- Photographs
- Animation
- Film
- Video
- Audio recordings
- Documentation of performance art
The letter of intent should be no longer than one page and describe the applicant's educational background, relevant experience in art, and expectations in relation to the program.
Application Deadlines
- FALL ENTRY (September): Deadline is March 1 for Canadian applicants and February 1 for U.S. and international applicants.
- WINTER ENTRY (January): Admission to this program is available for the Fall Term only.
