Program Overview

Film Production (BFA)

The Film Production program at Concordia University is a competitive and rigorous course of study that develops students' craft and vision as filmmakers. Under the supervision of established filmmakers, media artists, and scholars, students work on the making of a film every year, integrating hands-on technical training with aesthetic, historical, commercial, and theoretical topics that influence filmmaking today.

Program Overview

The program pushes students to find innovative ways to express themselves through motion pictures, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and a wide range of film and digital equipment. Students may choose to specialize in a specific technical area, such as cinematography or sound, and have the opportunity to participate in the Concordia Film Festival, a student-run festival showcasing student work.

Program Structure

A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film Production takes a minimum of three or four years (90-120 credits) of full-time study. The program offers two options:

  • Specialization in Film Production (66 credits)
  • Major in Film Production (54 credits) Students in the Major may apply to transfer to the Specialization in their third year. It is strongly recommended that students in the Specialization have, or acquire, knowledge of French.

Courses

The Film Production curriculum provides flexible opportunities to develop skills as a filmmaker through collaborative and individual studio practices, technical and theoretical seminars, critiques, screenings, and guest speakers. Core courses include Filmmaking I, II, and III, as well as technical courses that inform specific areas of film production, such as cinematography and sound. Ancillary courses incorporate process and aesthetic considerations, including writing, directing, expanded cinema, montage, production design, and creative producing.

Internships and Other Study Opportunities

The program offers international study opportunities through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), as well as professional internships that provide students with the opportunity to pursue work in the film industry. Students may also explore specific areas of film through independent study.

Admission Criteria

This program is available for Fall admission only. Minimum cut-off averages and course requirements vary depending on the applicant's educational background. Additional requirements for admission include a letter of intent and a portfolio.

Application Deadlines

The deadline for Fall entry is March 1 for Canadian applicants and February 1 for U.S. and international applicants.
