Program Overview
Electroacoustic Studies (BFA)
The Electroacoustic Studies program at Concordia University offers students the opportunity to explore the creative possibilities of sound and music in a variety of contexts. This program is designed for students who are interested in creating soundscapes for visual media, designing sounds for theatre or video games, and crafting sonic environments to enhance emotions.
Program Overview
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Electroacoustic Studies takes a minimum of three or four years of full-time study, depending on the student's academic background. The program provides students with a comprehensive education in music history, theory, and composition, as well as opportunities to master stereo and multi-track recording techniques, collaborate on university film and animation projects, and learn to use software tools to process analog and digital sounds.
Program Structure
The program offers a Major in Electroacoustic Studies (54 credits) and a Minor in Electroacoustic Studies (24 credits). After completing the first-year core courses (30 credits), students may apply for transfer into one of two specializations: Electroacoustic Creative Practices (60 credits) or Electroacoustic Recording Arts (60 credits).
Admission Criteria
Admission to the program is available for the Fall Term only. The minimum cut-off averages and course requirements for admission include:
- Quebec CEGEP: DEC
- High School: C+
- International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma: 26
- International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (CP): 4.3/7
- Baccalauréat français: 11
- British system of education (GCE): At least two A-level exams with CD results
- University Transfers (internal/external): C
Applicants must also submit additional requirements, including a letter of intent, portfolio, and Music Department Admissions Package. The portfolio submission deadline is March 1.
After Your Degree
Graduates of the Electroacoustic Studies program will have the knowledge and discipline to think critically about their work and collaborate with others, and will be poised to find success in the music industry. Possible career paths include sound designer/composer/musician for gaming, film, and video, recording engineer/producer, and live and studio electroacoustic musician.
