Ecology (BSc)

The Bachelor of Science in Ecology is a program that explores the intricate relationships among all living things and their interaction with the environment. As an ecologist, students will study population growth, competition, predation, and parasitism, as well as the evolution, biodiversity, and ecology of organisms.

Program Overview

The program will prepare students to conduct research on ecology and evolution, monitor and manage living resources, engage in sustainable development, and protect the planet. The Biology Department features state-of-the-art analysis tools, small class sizes, and strong student-professor relationships.

Program Structure

A Bachelor of Science degree takes a minimum of three or four years (90 120 credits) of full-time study, depending on the student's academic background. The program offers two options:

• Honours in Ecology (72 credits)
• Specialization in Ecology (60 credits)

Co-op Program

The Co-op program gives students the chance to complete paid work terms that last 12 to 16 weeks. Work positions are available in industry, national and provincial research institutes, health organizations, and universities located throughout Canada.

Admission Criteria

The minimum admission requirements are as follows:

• Quebec CEGEP: 26
  • Admission is based on the CRC requirements indicated above and completion of the following classes as part of their DEC: Calculus 1 and Calculus 2; Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism and Wave, Optics and Modern Physics; General Chemistry and Chemistry of Solutions; General Biology (OR Cellular Biology AND Ecology and Evolution)
• High School: B- overall, B- in math/sciences
  • Completed courses in the disciplines of Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
• International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma: 27 overall, 4 math, 4 science
  • One math (Applications and Interpretations HL, Analysis and Approaches HL or Analysis and Approaches SL)
  • One science (Physics, Chemistry or Biology, either SL or HL)
• International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (CP): 4.5/7 overall, 4 math, 4 science
  • One math (Applications and Interpretations HL, Analysis and Approaches HL or Analysis and Approaches SL)
  • One science (Physics, Chemistry or Biology, either SL or HL)
• Baccalauréat français: 12 overall, 12 in math/science
  • Premičre: Spécialité mathématiques AND Spécialité physique-chimie
  • Terminale: Spécialité mathématiques (also accepted, Spécialité Physique-Chimie AND Mathématiques Complémentaires)
• British system of education (GCE):
  • A-levels: At least two A-level exams CD, C in math, C in science
  • AS-levels: At least 4 AS-level exams with equivalent results
  • BTEC: Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in a related subject area with equivalent results
• University Transfers (internal/external): C+ overall, C+ in math/sciences
  • Completed courses in the disciplines of Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics

Application Deadlines

The application deadlines are as follows:

• Fall entry (September): March 1
• Winter entry (January): November 1
