About Program

Program Overview

Industrial Engineering (PhD)

The PhD program in Industrial Engineering at Concordia University is a thesis-based degree that explores various areas of research, including transportation systems, supply chain management, stochastic optimization, quality control, revenue management, and lean systems design. This program combines theoretical and research frameworks, providing students with the knowledge and research experience necessary for the design and operation of innovative systems.

Program Overview

Concordia's PhD program in Industrial Engineering is one of only two such programs currently offered in Quebec. Students have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and established research centres in a department that promotes interdisciplinary research. Completion of a doctoral thesis in a field of the student's choice is required.

Program Structure

  • The program requires 90 credits.
  • Degree requirements include:
    • 12 credits of coursework chosen from the list of Engineering Courses and Computer Science and Software Engineering Courses.
    • 8 credits from the following courses:
      • ENCS 8501 Comprehensive Examination (0.00)
      • ENCS 8511 Doctoral Research Proposal (6.00)
      • ENCS 8011 PhD Seminar (2.00)
    • 70 credits chosen from one of the following Research and Thesis courses:
      • ENGR 8911 Doctoral Research and Thesis (70.00)
      • COMP 8901 Doctoral Research and Thesis (70.00)
      • SOEN 8901 Doctoral Research and Thesis (70.00)

Admission Requirements

  • Admission on a full-time basis: Master's degree or equivalent with high standing in engineering or computer science, or in a cognate discipline. Holders of a bachelor's degree will, in general, be considered for admission to a master's program only. After completion of a minimum of one term of full-time study in the Master's degree, they may, upon application, be recommended by the Department and approved by the GCS Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies for admission to a PhD program.
  • Admission on a part-time basis: Master's degree with high standing in engineering, computer science, or a cognate discipline.
  • Proficiency in English: Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate that their knowledge of English is sufficient to pursue graduate studies in their chosen field.

Application Process

Review the four steps before applying, ensuring to check for program-specific requirements.

Application Deadlines

  • FALL: July 1 (Canadian resident), March 1 (U.S. and international)
  • WINTER: November 1 (Canadian resident), July 1 (U.S. and international)
  • SUMMER: March 1 (Canadian resident), November 1 (U.S. and international)

Priority will be given to complete applications submitted by the deadline. In some cases, programs may continue to accept applications as long as there is space available.

Tuition & Funding

  • Tuition and fees: Tuition and fees of the program may depend on the student's status, among other key factors. Estimate these costs based on the most common situations.
  • Awards and funding: Funding packages are generally available for students in thesis-based programs. They come in the form of awards, teaching, and research assistantships, which are offered at the time of admission to most students to allow them to focus on their research and studies. Research and thesis-based students are automatically considered for all entrance graduate awards when they apply to Concordia, provided they meet eligibility criteria. No separate application is required.
