Program Overview

PhD Textile Technology

The PhD Textile Technology program is a research-based degree that offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics in textile technology. Many Textile Technology PhDs have been supervised at the Scottish Borders Campus, across a wide range of topics including:

  • materials and pressure testing of medical compression
  • smart textiles for medical and health applications
  • nano-spinning
  • developing new test methods: e.g. fibre fragmentation (micro-plastics) or multiaxial measurement of fabric tension and shear properties
  • new product innovation and testing
  • development of new materials and dyes from waste

The vast majority of the textile technology projects seek solutions to technical problems or to make the textile processes more sustainable. With a fully-equipped and conditioned textile testing laboratory, a wet laboratory and sample production facilities (knit, weave, print), the campus is purpose built to support a range of research practices.
