Program Overview
University of the Punjab Ph.D. (Economics) Program
Introduction
The University of the Punjab offers a Ph.D. (Economics) program through the School of Economics, Faculty of Business, Economics and Administrative Sciences. This is a regular four-year morning program.
Program Structure
- Students admitted to the Ph.D. program have to complete M.Phil. courses and one semester of Ph.D. courses.
- Thereafter, they may appear for a comprehensive examination.
- The students can also opt for M.Phil. leading to Ph.D. admission.
- All Ph.D. students holding an M.Phil. degree have to complete one semester of Ph.D. coursework.
- The department offers more than ten areas of specialization.

Admission Criteria
Pre-requisite for Admission
- MS/M.Phil. or equivalent degree in Economics with CGPA > 3.00 or first division (18 years of education) from HEC recognized University.
- Only those candidates will be considered who have qualified GRE based departmental test after acquisition of 18 years education.
- Qualification from institutions other than the University of the Punjab will be equalized by the Equivalence Committee of the University of the Punjab, Lahore. Migration Certificate (NOC), in original, and Equivalence Certificate are required at the time of admission.
Admission Criteria / Merit Determination
- Admission shall be made on the basis of the Basic Admission Criteria.
- Basic Admission Criterion:
- Academic qualifications (as per break up given below) - 40 marks
- Publications in HEC approved journals (01 Mark per publication) - 05 marks
- Professional experience in relevant field (01 Mark for each year for job in the relevant field / as per departmental preference) - 05 marks
- Departmental admission test - 40 marks
- Interview - 10 marks
- Total: 100 marks
Note on Admission Criteria
- Minimum 50% marks are necessarily required to be obtained in academic merit, 70% marks in departmental admission test, and 50% marks in interview separately for admission in Ph.D. Program.
- Only those candidates who qualify the departmental admission test will be called for an interview.
