Multimedia Storytelling Master's Program
The Multimedia Storytelling Master's program is designed to help students tell compelling stories that matter in video and other media, making a difference in their communities. This program, formerly known as the Multimedia Journalism Master's, focuses on teaching students how to find and tell stories that engage and resonate with audiences.
Program Overview
In today's rapidly changing media landscape, multimedia journalists and content producers must be able to tell stories in ways that captivate and inspire. The program offers hands-on access to state-of-the-art equipment in radio/podcast and video/photo/VR studios, allowing students to learn storytelling and technical skills such as drone videography, podcasting, animation, explanatory video, and immersive media/virtual reality.
Curriculum and Courses
The program is based at the University of Oregon's Northeast Portland campus and offers flexible course modalities, including hybrid classes and night and weekend courses in person. Students can complete the 48-credit program in 15 months, but can negotiate a pace that works for them.
Faculty and Research
The program is led by experienced faculty, including:
- Ifanyi Bell, Adjunct Instructor, who teaches master's students how to make short documentaries
- Wes Pope, who leads the multimedia storytelling program
- Andrew DeVigal, who directs the SOJC's Agora Journalism Center
- Nikki Dunsire, who manages the Oregon Reality Lab
- Brent Walth, a Pulitzer Prize winner teaching investigative reporting
Student Work and Outcomes
Graduates of the program regularly land video, multimedia journalism, and content production jobs at well-known companies and nonprofits across Portland and the nation. Examples of student work include award-winning documentaries and podcasts that explore social and cultural issues.
Tuition and Funding
Tuition for the program varies based on the number of terms completed and the student's residency status. Estimated costs are:
- $28K+ for Oregon residents
- $37K+ for non-resident and international students The program is eligible for federal financial aid and the G.I. Bill, and students can also explore funding options such as tuition-matching or reimbursement programs.
STEM-Designated Degree
The Multimedia Storytelling Master's is a STEM-designated degree, allowing eligible international graduates to apply for a 24-month extension of their optional practical training (OPT), offering up to three years of work experience in the United States after graduation.
Accelerated Program
SOJC journalism students can earn a master's degree within a year of completing their bachelor's degree through the one-year accelerated Multimedia Storytelling Master's program.
Microcredentials
The program also offers graduate microcredential programs in Video Production and Community Podcasting, which can be completed in 12 credits and applied to a full degree if desired.
Campus and Facilities
The program is based at the University of Oregon's Northeast Portland campus, which features an updated library, classrooms, meeting spaces, and production spaces, including the Oregon Reality immersive experience lab. Students have access to state-of-the-art production equipment, including Canon cinema cameras, gimbals, drones, and audio and lighting gear.
