Program Overview


Program Overview

The Psychology in Barcelona program offers students the opportunity to explore the human experience in a unique and culturally rich environment. This program provides two upper-division psychology courses taught in English, emphasizing Spanish culture. In addition to the academic component, students will participate in guest speaker sessions, excursions, and activities focusing on the culture of Barcelona and Catalonia.


Site Visits & Cultural Activities

  • Two full-day field excursions in the Catalonia region: visits to Montserrat and Sitges
    • Two local academic visits related to the partner course content, with sites and entrances determined by the faculty
    • Two local cultural visits: examples include Palau de la Música Catalana, La Sagrada Família, and Parc Güell
    • Two cultural and experiential group activities:
      • Spanish cooking class featuring sangria and tapas
      • Wine tasting at the ACM-IAU Center

Academic Details

PSY388: Human Sexuality

  • Credits: 4 UO credits | 300 level Psychology Elective
  • Human Sexuality explores human sexuality from a psychological and cross-cultural perspective, including topics such as sexual development, orientation, identity, functioning, and cultural beliefs and myths surrounding sexuality.

PSY388: Positive Psychology & Happiness

  • Credits: 4 UO credits | 300 level Psychology Elective
  • Positive Psychology & Happiness introduces students to key concepts in positive psychology, including happiness, wellbeing, emotional resilience, and meaning, through both academic theory and experiential practices.

Course Equivalencies

  • UO students: please refer to the UO Course Equivalency Process and the UO Office of the Registrar Course Equivalency Database.
  • Non-UO students: actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office.

Additional Requirements

  • Note: Although useful, Spanish or Catalan language is not required to participate in the program.
  • Both courses are taught in English, and most of the population in Barcelona speaks at least a little English.

Housing Description

  • Students will stay in student residence halls with other students on the program.
  • The rooms are double occupancy with access to a shared kitchen to prepare meals and shared living spaces in the facility.
