Program Overview


Pedagogy: Piano (MMus)

The Master of Music in Pedagogy: Piano is a graduate program designed to provide advanced training in piano pedagogy and performance.


Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:


  • Demonstrate advanced competencies in piano pedagogy and its repertory. Studies in these areas comprise as much as two-thirds or at least one-third of the curriculum.
  • Gain knowledge and skills in one or more fields of music outside the major, such as theory, history, musicology, ethnomusicology, and performance. Such supportive studies in music that broaden and deepen musical competence comprise at least one-third of the curriculum.
  • As a culminating demonstration of professional capability in the major field, the student must present a final project, research paper, and/or recital.

Master of Music in Pedagogy: Piano Requirements

The program requires the following courses:


  • MUE 571: Piano Pedagogy I: Teaching Beginners (3 credits)
  • MUE 572: Piano Pedagogy II: Teaching Groups (3 credits)
  • MUE 573: Piano Pedagogy III: Teaching Intermediate Levels (3 credits)
  • MUE 606: Field Studies: [Topic] (3 credits, three terms)
  • MUE 639: Pedagogy and Practicum: [Topic] (3 credits)
  • MUS 611: Research Methods in Music (3 credits)
  • MUS 650652: Piano Literature (9 credits)
  • Applied Piano Study (12-24 credits)
    • 6 terms of MUP 650 or MUP 665 for a total of 12-24 credits
  • Two 500-level or above courses in music history/ethnomusicology, literature, or theory (6 credits)
  • Appropriate ensemble (3 terms) (3-6 credits)
    • At least 3 terms to be chosen from MUS 694, MUS 521-523, or participation in a large conducted ensemble as a principal keyboardist or accompanist.
  • MUE 601: Research: [Topic] (Final Project) (3 credits)
  • Recital (at least 30 minutes of music performance)
    • If pursuing a concurrent piano performance degree, a lecture demonstration or lecture recital may serve in lieu of the recital.
  • Final Oral Examination
    • Oral examination reviewing the project and degree coursework. The total credits required for the program are 51-66.
