Undergraduate Research and Distinguished Scholarships

The University of Oregon offers various undergraduate research and distinguished scholarship programs to support students in their academic and professional pursuits.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is a prestigious award for current sophomore and junior students who plan to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. The scholarship provides up to $7,500 annually to help cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

Eligibility

• Institutional endorsement is required; applicants cannot apply directly.
• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
• Students must be majoring in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering and intend to pursue a research career.
• Current sophomores or juniors are eligible, provided they are fully enrolled at the time of application.

Award Highlights

• The scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum value of approximately $7,500 per academic year.
• Sophomore-level scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of scholarship support, while junior-level recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of support.

Application Components

• Description of professional aspirations (~500 words)
• Description of research experience (~250 words)
• Research essay
• Information about research activities and awards, along with any associated papers, publications, or conferences
• Transcript(s)
• One letter of recommendation from the primary faculty mentor is required for the UO endorsement process; however, three total letters of recommendation will be required of nominees.
