First-Year Programs
The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success offers various first-year programs to support students' transition to college life.
First-Year Interest Groups
The First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs) provide a unique opportunity for students to become savvy learners, build a solid foundation in their chosen field, and develop skills that will benefit them in any STEM course.
Elements of Success 1
The Elements of Success FIG is designed to help students master chemistry and develop essential skills for success in STEM courses. This FIG requires attendance at a weekly study group in addition to the weekly seminar.
Courses in the FIG
- UGST 109 FIG Seminar: Monday, 10:00-11:20, LLCN 123, 1 credit The Elements of Success FIG seminar focuses on navigating the university, practicing effective learning and problem-solving strategies applied to chemistry, and attending social events to learn about campus opportunities.
- CH 111 Introduction to Chemical Principles: Tuesday/Thursday, 8:30-9:50, 156 STB, 4 credits This course introduces students to a limited number of chemistry topics and applied mathematics themes, enabling them to progress to the CH221, 222, 223 General Chemistry course sequence.
- MATH 111Z Precalculus I: Monday/Wednesday, 10:00-11:20, 180 PLC, 4 credits This course covers content from Chapters 1 through 6 and Chapter 11 from "College Algebra and Trigonometry for the University of Oregon," focusing on functions, linear functions, quadratic and polynomial functions, exponential and logarithmic models, and transformations of functions.
Class Encore - Chemistry 111
Class Encore is a small, structured study group for challenging classes, meeting once a week for 50 minutes, weeks 2-10, and is free.
