Qualitative Data Analysis using ATLAS.ti: A Critical User Perspective
Overview
This four-morning intensive workshop is designed to equip participants with the skills to conduct qualitative data analysis using ATLAS.ti. The program focuses on a critical user perspective, enabling participants to effectively identify, analyze, and visualize their research data.
Result
The workshop aims to achieve the following outcomes:
- Identify the main data sources in research projects that can be used for qualitative data analysis
- Use ATLAS.ti to import and prepare data
- Apply a coding strategy
- Examine and visualize data in a family of codes
Content
The program covers the following topics:
- Setting up research data in ATLAS.ti
- Sources of data and ethics in transcription and computer-assisted qualitative data analysis
- Coding strategies
- How to code in ATLAS.ti
- How to search and retrieve coded text
- How to create a family of codes

Teaching and Learning Approach
The workshop employs an active participation and hands-on approach. Participants will work with their PhD/MSc research qualitative data (secondary or primary) and are required to bring the data and main research questions on the first day. Participants must have ATLAS.ti pre-installed on their laptops.
Duration and Time Investment
- The workshop spans four mornings.
- Participants are required to attend all course days.
- Preparation time is approximately 6 hours.
- Participants must prepare a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation for the last day.

- The programme is designed for UT PhD candidates and ITC PLUS MSc students.
- Maximum number of participants: 10 PhDs + 5 MSc students.
- Assessment: Pass/Fail based on presentation and full attendance.
