EngD Program Overview

The EngD (Engineering Doctorate) programme is a 2-year post-master design programme that focuses on the direct needs of the industry. All EngD programmes are tailor-made in close cooperation with an industry partner, allowing students to learn and design high-level, creative, and innovative solutions for complex issues within a multidisciplinary team.

Program Structure

The programme combines an educational part at the University (~60 EC) and a practical design part at an organization (~60 EC), offering academic research in a professional context. The educational part provides the necessary technological and non-technological background to evaluate the effects of technology in the industrial context. The practical part involves working on a challenging and innovative technological design project, supervised by both industry engineers and university staff.

Program Areas

The University of Twente offers a diversity of Post-Master EngD programmes in the following areas:

  • Business & IT
  • Civil Engineering
  • Energy & Process Technology
  • Maintenance
  • Robotics

Admission Criteria

The EngD programme is open to a wide range of technically educated Master graduates. The key factors for admission include a perfect match between the specific design project and the applicant's MSc programme, affinity with technological designs, and intrinsic motivation.

Difference between EngD and PhD

The main differences between an EngD and a PhD programme are:

  • Duration: An EngD programme takes 2 years to complete, whereas a PhD programme takes 4 years.
  • Focus: An EngD programme focuses on technological designs in the industry, whereas a PhD programme focuses on scientific research.
  • Outcome: An EngD leads to an "Engineering Doctorate" (EngD), while a PhD leads to the title "Doctor" (Dr.).

Program Details

The EngD programme is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to design innovative solutions for complex issues in the industry. The programme's practical orientation and collaboration with industry partners make it an attractive option for those seeking to apply their technical knowledge in a professional context.
