Program Overview
Career Perspectives
The Master's in European Studies equips graduates to start a career in the diverse landscape of European policymaking. This can be in governmental institutions, non-governmental organisations, consultancies, or research institutes, where they can contribute to shaping policies at various levels within the European context. Graduates can also pursue an academic career and follow up their Master's with a PhD.
Type of Degree
Upon completion of this Master's, graduates receive a Master's degree in European Studies and can title themselves Master of Science (MSc).
Job Opportunities
The demand for experts who understand the complexities of Europe extends beyond Brussels. Graduates can work in national governments, private firms, the non-profit sector, and NGOs. With their broad understanding of the inner workings of Europe, they can contribute to solutions to many different challenges involving international relations, policy analysis, and cross-cultural collaboration.
- Examples of positions held by UT alumni with a Master's degree in European Studies include:
- Advisor International Cultural Relations at the European Commission
- Director of Lobbying and Policy at INretail
- Integration consultant at the Municipality of Deventer
- Graduates find interesting, challenging jobs soon after graduation, as policymakers, policy advisers, lobbyists, or researchers. They can focus on policymaking within government ministries, local authorities, or the European Parliament.
- Other options include working at international organisations like the United Nations, World Bank, IMF, or OECD, or starting a career within the private sector, working at banks, insurance companies, IT companies, energy suppliers, and companies that deal with EU regulations and policies.
- Graduates can also join NGOs like Greenpeace, Amnesty International, or Doctors Without Borders.
Continue as a Researcher: Obtain a PhD
Instead of pursuing a professional career right away, graduates can opt to follow a PhD programme at Twente Graduate School (TGS). This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth at one of the research institutes. Obtaining a PhD earns the title of Doctor (Dr).
Start a Business
The University of Twente encourages entrepreneurship, having been the birthplace of many high-tech spin-off companies. Graduates can use their research or inventions to start up their own innovative company. The university offers support through the Novel-T foundation and their start-up hub Incubase on campus. Examples of successful start-ups include ECsens, a high-tech research start-up focusing on Lab-on-a-Chip platforms for liquid biopsies.
