Overview

The Supervising PhD's program is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to effectively supervise PhD students. The program covers various aspects of supervision, including leadership styles, communication, feedback, and cultural differences.

Program Details

• The program is suited for beginners as well as supervisors with a couple of years of experience, including postdocs, assistant, associate, and full professors.
• The program is not intended for PhD candidates.
• The course code is 2110.

Course Content

• Adjusting leadership style to specific situations
• Communicating effectively
• Giving constructive feedback
• Supervising the planning process
• Coaching the writing process
• Dealing with cultural differences
  • Discussing the model of Situational Leadership
  • Addressing the five principles of scientific integrity: Honesty, Carefulness, Transparency, Independence, and Responsibility
  • Strategies for helping PhD students with the writing process

Schedule

• The program will be offered on the following dates:
  • 19 January and 2 February, 09:30-17:00
  • 10 and 24 April, 09:30-17:00
• The program will be held at the Vrijhof building.

Logistics

• The course fee will be paid for by central funds, and participation is in consultation with the supervisor.
• The maximum number of participants is 12.
• Trainers: Marieke Hohen and Peter Verkerk from Hertz, training for Scientists.
• Course materials will be provided during the training.
