Admission and Application for Dutch HBO Students

The University of Twente offers a Master's program in Industrial Engineering & Management (IEM) for students with a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences (HBO). To be eligible, students must first complete a Pre-Master's program.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for the Pre-Master's in Industrial Engineering & Management, students must meet the following conditions:

• Condition 1: Completion of a HBO Bachelor's in a related field
• Condition 2: Pre-university level (VWO) Mathematics B
• Condition 3: Proficiency in English
• Condition 4: Motivation and grades

Related HBO Bachelor's

The following HBO Bachelor's are considered related fields:

• Technische Bedrijfskunde (Industrial Engineering)
• Technische Informatica (Informatics)
• Werktuigbouwkunde (Mechanical Engineering)
• Civiele Techniek (Civil Engineering)
• Elektrotechniek (Electrical Engineering)
• Industrieel Product Ontwerpen (Industrial Design)
• Scheikunde (Chemical Engineering)
• Bouwtechnische Bedrijfskunde (Construction Engineering)
• Technische Natuurkunde (Physics)

Condition 2: Pre-university Level Mathematics B

Students must demonstrate proficiency in Mathematics B at pre-university (VWO) level by submitting one of the following documents:

• A pre-university level (VWO) certificate including Mathematics B
• A separate pre-university level certificate in Mathematics B
• A certificate or other document comparable to the above, showing proof of mathematical and analytical skills at pre-university level

Condition 3: English Proficiency

The Master's in Industrial Engineering & Management is taught in English. Students must have sufficient English language skills to follow the courses. A Dutch diploma meets the English language requirements.

Condition 4: Motivation and Grades

Students must submit a clear and relevant statement of motivation for one of the specializations and a motivational letter explaining why they and the program are a great fit.

Pre-Master's Program

The Pre-Master's program is designed to prepare students for the Master's in Industrial Engineering & Management. It consists of 30 EC and can be completed during or after the HBO Bachelor's program.

Pre-Master's in a Nutshell

• Spend six months preparing for the Master's in Industrial Engineering & Management
• Get acquainted with scientific research skills and study the field of Industrial Engineering & Management
• Raise knowledge of mathematics and statistics to an academic level
• Complete the Pre-Master's during or after the HBO degree

Application Procedure

Students cannot apply directly for the Pre-Master's. They must apply for the Master's program via Studielink. The University of Twente will alter this to a Pre-Master's registration if necessary.

Start Dates

After completing the HBO Bachelor's and the Pre-Master's, students can start their Master's in Industrial Engineering & Management in February or September. The Pre-Master's starts every September.

Differences between HBO and WO

A university-level Master's degree can be a valuable supplement to an HBO Bachelor's. The main differences between HBO and WO are:

• WO (research university) focuses on theoretical foundations and research
