Career Perspectives

The Management of Product Development (MPD) specialisation offers a broad perspective, enabling graduates to secure jobs that value this breadth of vision. Potential career paths include:

  • Product developer
  • Design team leader
  • Technical consultant Graduates can also start their own business, leveraging the entrepreneurial spirit encouraged by the University of Twente.

Type of Degree

Upon completing the Master's programme with the MPD specialisation, graduates receive a Master's degree in Industrial Design Engineering and can title themselves Master of Science (MSc). The specialisation is not mentioned on the diploma, as all graduates meet the requirements of a qualified industrial design engineer.

Job Opportunities

After graduating, students are equipped to enter any area of industrial design engineering, bringing a specific perspective to their role. Alumni with this specialisation work in various positions and organisations, such as:

  • Product Developer at Dunlop footwear
  • Test expert at Philips Domestic Appliances
  • Continuous improvement specialist at Rolls-Royce aircraft industries
  • Brand Manager at De Vegetarische Slager (The Vegetarian Butcher)/Unilever Many graduates work in R&D or product development departments within companies like FrieslandCampina, Philips, Nedap, Thales, Grolsch, Douwe Egberts, KLM, or Accenture. They can fulfill management positions, such as project leader or production manager, or work as specialists in roles like packaging engineer or product designer.

Start a Business

The University of Twente encourages entrepreneurship, with over 1,000 start-ups to its name. Students can turn their business ideas into reality, and former students have successfully started companies like Aryzon and Dynteq.

Continue as a Researcher: Obtain a PhD

Instead of pursuing a professional career immediately, graduates can opt to follow a PhD programme through the Twente Graduate School. This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth, earning the title of Doctor (Dr).

Follow an EngD Programme

The Twente Graduate School offers five different Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programmes for excellent professionals and graduates with a Master's degree. These two-year, tailored programmes aim to develop high-level technological designers. The EngD programme most likely to match the interests of a Master's in Industrial Design Engineering is Maintenance, which leads to a certified diploma and the academic degree title, Engineering Doctorate (EngD).
