Introduction to the Pre-Master's Programme in Humanitarian Engineering

The Pre-Master's programme in Humanitarian Engineering is a transfer programme designed to prepare students with a bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences or research university for a master's programme. This programme is intended for students who are not directly admissible to the master's programme but have obtained a degree that is sufficiently related to their master's of choice.

What is a Pre-Master's Programme?

A pre-master's programme is a customized programme that addresses any gaps in a student's previous knowledge and helps them determine if studying at a research university is the right fit for them.

Admission Criteria

The admission criteria for the Pre-Master's programme in Humanitarian Engineering vary depending on the student's previous education.

  • Bachelor's Degree from the University of Twente: Students who have completed or are about to complete one of the listed BSc programmes at the University of Twente are directly admissible to the Master in Humanitarian Engineering.
    • Listed programmes include:
      • University College Twente
      • Advanced Technology
      • Applied Mathematics
      • Applied Physics
      • Biomedical Technology
      • Business Information Technology
      • Chemical Science and Engineering
      • Civil Engineering
      • Creative Technology
      • Electrical Engineering
      • Industrial Design Engineering
      • Industrial Engineering and Management
      • Mechanical Engineering
      • Technical Computer Science
  • University of Applied Sciences (Dutch HBO): Students with a Bachelor's degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences are required to complete a pre-master's programme.
  • Dutch Research University (Dutch WO): Students who have completed or will soon complete a Bachelor's degree at a Dutch research university but are not directly eligible for the MSc in Humanitarian Engineering due to knowledge gaps will need to complete a pre-master's programme.
  • International Degree: Students who have completed or will soon complete a Bachelor's degree abroad may need to complete a pre-master's programme to address any knowledge gaps.

Programme Requirements and Guidelines

The pre-master's programme is designed to address any gaps in a student's previous knowledge and help them determine if studying at a research university is the right fit for them. The following rules apply:

  • The pre-master's programme must be successfully completed within one year.
  • There is a limited number of re-sits available per course.
  • If a student does not successfully complete the pre-master's programme, they will not be eligible to start a pre-master's in another programme at the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente.

Programme Structure and Content

The Pre-Master's programme is customized to the individual needs of each student, with no standard format. The content and workload will vary depending on the student's prior education and the areas where knowledge is lacking. For students with backgrounds in engineering, the focus will typically be on academic skills and foundational mathematics and statistics. For students with backgrounds in social sciences or technology, the focus will typically be on foundational mathematics and statistics.

Options and Costs

The university offers flexibility in how students complete their pre-master's, with options to study both online and on campus. The cost of the pre-master's varies based on the individual situation, depending on the duration and study load. A flat fee per EC applies.
