The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) is a degree that plays a vital role in improving patient health by conducting diagnostic tests and recommending treatment options. As a medical scientist, graduates will perform tests on blood, tissues, and other bodily fluids to help doctors diagnose a range of diseases.

- Work internationally following graduation, as Griffith is Australia's only internationally accredited medical science degree, allowing graduates to work in the UK and other Commonwealth countries.
- The only program in Australia to enable students to gain hands-on experience in all 6 disciplines of Medical Laboratory Science, including blood transfusion and immunology, clinical biochemistry, haematology, histopathology, microbiology, and molecular diagnosis.
- Develop foundational knowledge in medical science with core subjects including general chemistry, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology.
- From the second year onwards, students focus on specialist areas of medical laboratory science, learning to diagnose diseases and delve deeper into blood transfusions, immunology, clinical biochemistry, haematology, histopathology, microbiology, and molecular diagnostics.
- Graduate job-ready, with hands-on experience through full-time clinical placements, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world medical challenges.
Program Structure
The program consists of 30 credit points of coursework and a 50 credit point research thesis component.
Coursework
- Provides critical evaluation of research and presentation.
- Develops students' knowledge and understanding of statistical analyses techniques as applied to scientific research.
- Develops an awareness of research proposal design and background.
Dissertation
- Students are required to find a suitable supervisor for their research project prior to submitting their application for admission into the program.
- The final research component of the program will be a dissertation involving research on a specific project, a seminar, and a thesis describing the research in detail.
Attendance Information
This program is offered on-campus full-time or part-time. Students may commence the program in either February or July.
Fees
International Students
- An indicative annual tuition fee of $41,500 for 2026.
- The tuition fee is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student is enrolled.
Admission Requirements
- Successful completion of the Griffith Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification from another university.
- A Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 5.0 over the second, third, and fourth year of the Bachelor degree, excluding the Clinical Placement courses.
Language Requirements
- A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0.
- OR a minimum score of 575 on TOEFL.
- OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no sub-score less than 19).
- English test results must be no more than two years old.
Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning
Students may be eligible for credit based on prior study or experience, which may reduce the time it takes to complete the degree.
