Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours)

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to undertake advanced study and supervised research work in the specialisation defined by their undergraduate degree program within the context of a multidisciplinary cohort.

Program Overview

This program consists of 30 credit points of coursework and a 50 credit point research thesis component. The coursework will provide critical evaluation of research and presentation, develop the student's knowledge and understanding of statistical analyses techniques as applied to scientific research, and develop an awareness of research proposal design and background.

Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission to this Honours program are:

• Successful completion of the Griffith Bachelor of Medical Science or an equivalent qualification from another university
• A Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 5.0 for the second and third year level courses of the Bachelor degree

Language Requirements

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are:

• A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0
• OR a minimum score of 575 on TOEFL
• OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no sub-score less than 19)
• OR no score less than 3+ in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by ISLPR Language Services only)
• OR a minimum overall score of 176 (no score less than 169) on C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English) or C2 Proficiency (formerly Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English)
• OR an overall score of 58 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic) with no score less than 50

Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning

You may be eligible for credit based on your prior study or experience. This may reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your degree. Credit can include:

• Prior study undertaken through an accredited education provider
• Prior experience through professional or life experience such as employment, workplace training, volunteer work or community-based activities

Degree Details

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) degree requires the completion of 80 credit points, comprising:

• 20 credit points for all Core Courses
• 50 credit points for all Dissertation Courses
• 10 credit points from Listed Electives

Complete 20 credit points for ALL of the following:

• Quantitative Research
• Applied Research Statistics and Meta-Analysis

Dissertation Courses

Complete 50 credit points for ALL of the following:

• Dissertation Thesis (Parts 1-5)

Listed Electives

Complete exactly 10 credit points from the following:

• Advanced Studies in Health Sciences
• Quantitative Research
• Applied Research Statistics and Meta-Analysis
• Independent Study
• Independent Practice Project
• Clinical Trials - Principles and Practice
• Qualitative Research
• Research Evidence and Practice
• Epidemiology: Principles and Practices

Tuition Fees

The indicative annual tuition fee for international students is $39,500.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program will be able to plan and conduct research in medical science and related disciplines, and therefore will be well-placed for positions in the private, not for profit, and public sectors. In addition, graduates will be eligible to apply for admission to higher degree research programs, thereby preparing them for high level research careers.
