Master of Secondary Teaching

The Master of Secondary Teaching is a postgraduate degree designed for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in another field and wish to transition into teaching. This program focuses on educating children from Year 7 to 12 and is accredited by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

Program Overview

The Master of Secondary Teaching is offered full-time and part-time, with a duration of 1.5 to 2 years full-time and 3 to 4 years part-time. The program is available at the Gold Coast, Brisbane South (Nathan), and online.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have a completed Bachelor degree (or equivalent) that does not lead to teacher registration, with a minimum GPA of 4.0 on a 7-point scale, and disciplinary strengths in two distinctive teaching areas.

Program Structure

The program consists of 160 credit points, comprising:

• 120 credit points for core courses
• 40 credit points for curriculum studies within approved teaching areas

Curriculum Studies

Students must complete 40 credit points for one of the following:

• 2 teaching areas from the list of teaching areas
• 1 teaching area and approved learning enhancement
• 1 senior phase teaching area and education studies

Teaching Areas and Curriculum Studies

The teaching areas and curriculum studies courses are offered at various campuses, including Gold Coast, Brisbane South (Nathan), and online.

Education Studies

The education studies elective is available if students are accepted into the program with one senior phase teaching area.

Program Accreditation

The Master of Secondary Teaching is accredited by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

Attendance Information

The program is offered full-time and part-time, with compulsory tutorial attendance for all professional experience courses.

Professional Practice Requirements

Students must reach an 80% threshold for tutorial attendance and active participation in the lead up to placement for all professional experience courses.

Working with Children Check (Blue Card)

Students must undergo the Working with Children Check and be issued with a Blue Card before undertaking professional experience placements.

Fees

The indicative annual tuition fee for international students is $36,500.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Master of Secondary Teaching will be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers and be prepared for teaching positions in the public or private sector.

Pathways to Further Study

Upon graduation, students with a GPA of 5.0 or higher will be eligible to follow a research pathway via the Master of Education and Professional Studies Research (5608) and then onto a PhD.
