Program Overview

Introduction to the Notfallmedizin Program

The Notfallmedizin program at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a comprehensive educational initiative focused on emergency medicine. The program is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of emergency medicine, including the latest techniques, technologies, and research in the field.

Zentrale Leitung der Notfallmedizinischen Lehre

The Zentrale Leitung der notfallmedizinischen Lehre (Central Leadership of Emergency Medical Education) is responsible for the content and organizational planning of the program. This includes:

  • Aligning and updating course content to meet the requirements of the Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV) first aid courses in the basic courses.
  • Offering advanced courses that follow international formats, such as the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for pediatric and adult advanced life support.
  • Incorporating principles from the S3 guideline for polytrauma and the Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) principles of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and Deutsche Berufsfeuerwehrverband (DBRD) for trauma emergencies, as well as specialty-specific guidelines for common acute illnesses.

Educational Approach

The program emphasizes not only the technical skills required in emergency medicine but also non-technical skills such as communication, teamwork, ethical considerations, and crew resource management. The educational approach is interdisciplinary and interprofessional, recognizing the importance of collaboration in emergency medical settings.

Program Components

Key components of the program include:

  • Comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of topics in emergency medicine.
  • Practical training and simulations to prepare students for real-world scenarios.
  • Integration of research and evidence-based practice into the curriculum.
  • Opportunities for students to engage in research projects and academic work under the supervision of experienced faculty members.

Support and Resources

The program offers support for students, including:

  • Dozierendenschulungen (teacher training) in collaboration with the Lernzentrum (Learning Center).
  • Testing of new technical and didactic methods.
  • Support for the development and implementation of examination tasks.
  • Supervision of theses and other research projects in the field of emergency medicine and education.
