Program Overview
Transplant Care at DHZC
Providing Comprehensive Care to Transplant Patients
The DHZC has been performing heart, lung, and combined heart-lung transplants for over 30 years. On our transplant and heart failure station WD3U/WD3I, we care for patients before and after a heart or lung transplant. Our services include:
- Caring for freshly transplanted patients in the initial phase after surgery, requiring close interdisciplinary collaboration with transplant surgeons and other departments.
- Providing care for long-term transplant patients who are admitted for routine check-ups, infection therapy, or rejection treatment.
- Admitting patients for listing examinations for a transplant.
- Caring for patients with circulatory support systems (artificial hearts) and decompensated heart failure, where their body is too weak to compensate for the restricted pumping capacity of the heart.
Team and Expertise
Our team consists of practice instructors, heart failure specialist nurses, transplant specialist nurses, a two-person management team, and a station assistant. Our station team is characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinary collaboration. We prioritize a pleasant working atmosphere and extensive training opportunities. New colleagues are integrated into our team over a period of at least eight weeks.

Interview with the Team
What makes working with transplant patients so special?
Our patients come from the intensive care unit to us. There, they were intensively cared for 24 hours a day. With us, they are allowed to and must come to rest. They learn to be alone again, to be self-sufficient and resilient, to gain trust in the new organ, the body, and in themselves. We accompany them in this process.
Education and Training
Interested individuals can complete a generalist nursing training at the DHZB Academy. The training lasts three years and allows for a lot of practical experience on the nursing stations at DHZC. Prior knowledge and personal development opportunities are taken into account individually.
Documentation "Gifted Life"
The 25-minute documentary shows the story of our patient Franziska Bleis, who suffered from a life-threatening heart muscle inflammation and received a donor organ at DHZC. We were allowed to accompany her with the camera over a period of three and a half years on her way back to life.
