Program Overview
Introduction to Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis of Animal Studies
The program is designed to teach participants the essential steps required for conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical animal studies. Through a combination of lectures, practical exercises, and tutorials, participants will learn how to:
- Understand what a systematic review is and why it should be conducted
- Identify the components of a good research question
- Recognize the components of a protocol
- Appreciate the importance of protocol preregistration and where to register it
- Develop an accurate systematic search strategy
- Learn how to screen datasets based on predefined criteria for inclusion in the study
- Understand the steps required for data extraction, including information on study design and quantitative data
- Evaluate studies for risk of bias and reporting
- Conduct a meta-analysis of effect size data using R
- Report on a completed systematic review

Course Structure
The course is offered live and online via MS TEAMS and takes place over three consecutive days, with 4 hours of instruction per day.
