Program Overview


Introduction to Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis of Animal Studies

The program is designed to teach participants the essential steps required for conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical animal studies. Through a combination of lectures, practical exercises, and tutorials, participants will learn how to:


  • Understand what a systematic review is and why it should be conducted
  • Identify the components of a good research question
  • Recognize the components of a protocol
  • Appreciate the importance of protocol preregistration and where to register it
  • Develop an accurate systematic search strategy
  • Learn how to screen datasets based on predefined criteria for inclusion in the study
  • Understand the steps required for data extraction, including information on study design and quantitative data
  • Evaluate studies for risk of bias and reporting
  • Conduct a meta-analysis of effect size data using R
  • Report on a completed systematic review
