Program Overview
The Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin offers a three-year training program as an Operation Technical Assistant (OTA). The program starts annually on April 1st and October 1st. As an OTA, individuals work closely with surgeons, prepare operating rooms, and assist during surgeries.
Program Structure
The training program consists of alternating theoretical and practical blocks. The practical training is divided into mandatory deployments in general surgery, traumatology, gynecology, and urology at the three Charité locations. Additional deployments take place in operating departments, such as neurosurgery or pediatric surgery, and in other functional departments like anesthesiology, endoscopy, emergency rooms, and outpatient clinics.
Responsibilities
Trainees will learn to:
- Handle instrumentation during operations in various specialties
- Support the surgical team during operations
- Prepare and clean up operating rooms
- Implement hygiene guidelines and maintain aseptic working conditions
- Participate in organizing and coordinating work processes in the operating room
- Take measures in emergency, crisis, and disaster situations
Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have a secondary school diploma or equivalent
- Be at least 17 years old at the start of training
- Have completed an internship in an operating room or surgical station (desired)
- Possess the necessary physical and personal abilities
- Demonstrate language proficiency (B2 level) if non-native German speaker
- Show interest in medical contexts and enjoy working with people
- Be reliable, team-oriented, and organized
- Demonstrate a sense of responsibility, commitment, and willingness to learn

Important Information
- The training program is based on the tariff agreement for trainees, with a fair training salary (gross) that increases over the three years:
- 1st year: 1,340.69
- 2nd year: 1,402.07
- 3rd year: 1,503.38
- The training contract includes 30 days of vacation, an annual bonus in November, additional company pension, and capital-forming benefits
- A completion bonus of 400 is awarded upon successful completion of the final exam
- There are good chances of being hired after completing the training program
