Program Overview


Introduction to the Doctoral Program in Nuclear and Ionising Radiation Engineering

The Doctoral Program in Nuclear and Ionising Radiation Engineering (PDINRI) is designed to provide students with solid training that enables them to tackle research and development tasks associated with one of the three specialisations of the program: nuclear energy technology, the use of ionising radiation for medical and industrial purposes, or particle accelerator technology.


General Information

  • Access Profile: The most suitable prior learning to enter the doctoral program is that of graduates with a scientific or technological background who have taken one of the following master's degrees: Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering or Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Output Profile: Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired competencies needed to carry out quality research, including a systematic understanding of the field of study, the ability to conceive, design, or create substantial research processes, and the capacity to contribute to pushing back the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
  • Number of Places: 10
  • Duration and Dedication Regime: The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, and seven years for part-time studies.

  • Organization: The program is organized by the Institute of Energy Technologies (PROMOTORA) and the Department of Physics.
  • Agreements with Other Institutions: The program has agreements with several institutions, including the University of Barcelona, Universität Duisburg-Essen, and the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council.

Access, Admission, and Registration

  • Access Requirements: Applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees.
  • Admission Criteria and Merits Assessment: The academic committee of the program makes the admission decision, considering factors such as academic record, personal interview, research experience, and command of the English language.
  • Training Complements: The natural route to enter the doctoral program is via the master's degree in Nuclear Engineering at the UPC or the master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at the UPC. Students who enter the program from other master's degrees may need to take specific research bridging courses.
  • Enrolment Period: The enrolment period for new doctoral students is in September, and for continuing doctoral students, it runs from September to mid-October.

Monitoring and Evaluation of the Doctoral Student

  • Formation Activities: The program includes various formation activities, such as tutorials, mobility, training in information skills, research methodology, innovation and creativity, and language and communication skills.
  • Procedure for Assignment of Tutor and Thesis Director: The academic committee of the doctoral program assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enroll for the first time.
  • Permanence: The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, and seven years for part-time studies. Doctoral candidates may be dismissed from the program for various reasons, including failure to complete annual enrollment or apply for temporary interruption.

Learning Resources

The program has access to various facilities, including classrooms for seminars, study rooms, computer rooms, laboratories, workshops, and the faculty library. The building has a Wi-Fi network and a laptop loan service managed by the faculty library.
