Program Overview
Master's Degree in Photonics
The Master's degree in Photonics is a program designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of photonics. The program is taught entirely in English and is held on a face-to-face basis.
Academic Year
The academic year starts in September 2024 and ends in September 2025. The lectures are held from the second half of September 2024 to the middle of April 2025. From April to July or September 2025, full-time is devoted to the master's thesis work.
Course Program and Timetable
The Course Program covers 60 ECTS (one year). The program includes a range of courses, and the timetable is available for download.
Specific Requirements
Students must be in possession of an official University degree in a scientific or technological field corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credits, in the fields of physics, engineering physics, telecommunications engineering, electrical, mechanical, and electronic engineering, and optics, or in a related field such as nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanophotonics, and bioengineering.
Admission Criteria
Admission to the master's degree in Photonics is evaluated by the Academic Commission in view of:
- Applicants' academic records (academic performance as well as their scientific background)
- Recommendation letter from a person with a scientific or academic background in the field of optics/photonics or a related discipline
- Proof of scientific activity or professional experience in the field of optics/photonics
- A personal interview with the admissions committee (if necessary)
Application Procedure
To be admitted for the academic year, all applicants must pre-register through the UPC university website. Applicants should upload copies of the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Motivation letter expressing interest in enrolling for the master's degree in Photonics
- Photocopy of the applicant's Spanish ID card, foreigner ID card, or passport
- Original and photocopy (or certified photocopy) of the Bachelor of Science or Technological Degree diploma
- Academic certificate (transcript of records) listing the subjects completed, the marks received, and the number of credits/hours of each one
- Documents that can prove English level: an official English certificate, accreditation of courses, seminars, or summer schools attended in English
Deadline for Application
The deadline for pre-registration is the beginning of July 2024. Students will be notified by email of the outcome of their application as soon as possible.
Enrolment
The enrolment period is in September 2024 (exact date to be announced). Students will receive detailed information by email from the secretary of the Escola Tčcnica Superior d'Enginyeria de Telecomunicació de Barcelona at UPC, Campus Nord, BCN.
Master Thesis
To obtain the master's degree, students must complete a Master's Thesis Project of 16 ECTS. The thesis project is an extended individual research-oriented work, and students are expected to develop a guided work on the proposed topic.
MSc Thesis Evaluation Process
The MSc Thesis evaluation process has two steps: a brief report summarizing the work done, and an oral presentation in front of a jury of the main tasks developed and results obtained.
Language Courses
Students have the opportunity to learn Spanish or Catalan languages, which can result in ECTS credits. These credits are outside the Course Program of the master's degree and cannot be accounted within the ECTS credits necessary to complete the master's degree.
Tuition Fees
The tuition fees are expected to be above 2000. Students are responsible for covering their travel and living expenses, as well as the tuition fees.
