Program Overview

Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture

The Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture, referred to as MBLandArch, is organized by the School of Architecture of Barcelona in collaboration with the School of Agriculture of Barcelona. This program is an official Master's degree at the Polytechnical University of Catalonia (UPC), recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain. It is also part of the European Master in Landscape Architecture (EMiLA), an official qualification recognized by the European Federation of Landscape Architects IFLA Europe.

Concept

MBLandArch focuses on the academic approach of landscape architecture, ranging from a projective exploration to contemporary topics of our environment. The program merges both practice and theory, considering inherent perspectives such as landscape ecology, humanistic disciplines, and the construction of public space, among others. It pursues a transdisciplinary and multiscale research within landscape architecture to respond to contemporary environmental complexity through design strategies.

What We Offer

MBLandArch is structured in various fields and subjects, including DESIGN, ANALYSIS, THEORY, TECHNOLOGY, and SCIENCE, all related to the Landscape discipline. This diverse range of disciplines allows students to acquire skills in:

  • Landscape Design: Understanding environmental dynamics and a wide range of technologies to preserve, restore, recover, manage, or invent landscapes.
  • Construction and Agency: Public space design, ranging from urban design to the expression of various forms of relationship between urban and natural areas.
  • Theory: A critical study of landscape history and theory.
  • Models & Representation: Mastering multiple ways and techniques for landscape representation, as well as skills in mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Comprehension & Transdisciplinary Approach: Comprehending and integrating the relationship between landscape architecture and ecology, geography, arts, social sciences, urban planning, and architecture.

Program Structure and Philosophy

The program is defined by an understanding of a large territorial scale and the usage of ecological theoretical concepts, as well as its representation. A transdisciplinary and multiscale approach, specific to Landscape Architecture, has traditionally nurtured the discipline and determined the Barcelona School of Architecture's reputation through artistic, creative, and architectural skills. The program's director, Enric Batlle, emphasizes the importance of Barcelona's urban model and its historical renowned public space design, which are spread worldwide.

Academic Approach

MBLandArch's academic approach is characterized by its emphasis on both theoretical and practical aspects of landscape architecture. The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the discipline, enabling them to address complex environmental issues through innovative design strategies. By integrating various fields of study, the program fosters a transdisciplinary approach that prepares students for the challenges of contemporary landscape architecture practice.
