Program Overview


University Access Program

The University Access program is designed to prepare adults who may not have formal qualifications for successful study at university. These are Special Purpose Awards (Level 6) which equip students with the skills and confidence required to take the next step to selected degree courses at UCD.


Program Details

  • The program is a year-long, part-time course.
  • It is designed for individuals who do not meet existing entry requirements to university or those who already qualify but are not ready to commit to a full-time degree.
  • The program aims to give students the skills needed to engage in a full-time degree, introduce them to the methods of study, writing, and research required to take part in higher education, and prepare them to compete for entry to third level.

Access Courses

  • Access to Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Law (AHSSL)
  • Access to Science, Engineering, Agricultural Science, Computer Science, Medicine, Vet Medicine and Sustainability (SEAM+)

Program Objectives

  • To provide students with the skills and confidence required to succeed in higher education
  • To introduce students to the methods of study, writing, and research required to take part in higher education
  • To prepare students to compete for entry to third level and to make informed choices about further study
  • To increase students' self-confidence in their capacity to progress and participate in university
  • To offer students the opportunity to experience the fulfillment that can be gained from learning in an academic setting
