Program Overview

Erasmus in Italy Program

The Erasmus in Italy program is an EU-wide exchange program between universities, allowing students to enroll for a year at an Italian university. This unique experience enables students to follow courses, improve their Italian language skills, and enjoy living in Italy while meeting people from all over the world.

Program Details

  • The program involves registering in one of the partner universities in Italy and completing a given number of courses/modules, accumulating a minimum of 45 credits.
  • The grades obtained while in Italy do not count towards the final GPA, but the year as a whole is recognized, and if successfully completed, the BA degree will be redenominated.
  • To apply, students must be full-time, registered in the UCD BA program, and have successfully completed Stage 1 with at least 50 Stage 2 credits, including all core subject credits.

Eligibility and Priority

  • Students registered for the BA International in Modern Languages (BAIML) will spend their third year abroad and are guaranteed a place if they meet the requirements.
  • Other BA students may also apply, whether they are doing a Major or Minor in Italian or taking Italian as an Elective, provided they have successfully completed both ITAL 20010 and ITAL 20080.
  • Priority is given to BAIML, Major, Minor, and Elective students in that order.

Partner Universities

  • There are places reserved for students studying Italian in the UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at the following universities:
    • Università degli studi di CAGLIARI (Sardinia)
    • Università degli studi di MACERATA
    • Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (MILAN)
    • Università degli studi di Roma III (ROME)
    • Università di TRENTO
    • Università degli studi di URBINO
    • Università di Pisa
    • Università degli Studi di Bologna
  • Additionally, there are 'open places' in Rome, Lausanne, Amsterdam, and Berlin, which students may apply for directly through the International Office.

Application and Selection

  • Application forms are circulated to students registered to Level 2 Italian language in the first semester and must be returned by the end of the semester.
  • The Head of Italian establishes a list of nominees after the January examination session, and this list is then passed on to the UCD International Office, which organizes the formal application to the host universities in Italy.
  • If there are more applicants than places, first choice is given on the basis of Level 1 and Level 2 module results, especially language modules.

Costs and Financial Assistance

  • Students will have to pay the current registration fee at UCD for the year but no registration fee at the host university in Italy.
  • The cost of living in Italy is generally lower than in Ireland, with estimated living expenses for the year ranging from EUR 6,000 to 8,000 (plus travel).
  • Successful applicants should receive a grant of approximately EUR 250 per month, and students on a local authority grant should continue to receive their grant while abroad.
