Engineering Doctorate (EngD)
Program Overview
Introduction to EngD at TU/e
The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) program at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a 2-year post-master's program that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience in designing innovative technological solutions for the high-tech industry or healthcare. The program is designed to provide a boost to career opportunities in the industry, with many graduates securing excellent jobs at multinational companies such as Philips and ASML.
Why Become an EngD Trainee at TU/e?
By joining the EngD program at TU/e, you can:
- Enhance your technological knowledge at a leading technical university in the Netherlands
- Gain practical experience with the latest design methods
- Develop your professional skills
- Receive a salary and attractive secondary employment conditions during the program
- Complete the program in 2 years, with most programs taught in English
General Structure of the EngD Program
The EngD program lasts 2 years. In the first year, you will deepen your technological knowledge, gain practical experience with the latest design methods, and work on your professional skills. In the second year, you will carry out a technological design project (10 to 12 months) for a leading high-tech company or a healthcare institution.
How to Apply for an EngD Program
To apply for an EngD position, you will need to follow a application procedure. The application is open to university graduates from the Netherlands and other countries. You will need to have at least a Master of Science degree or equivalent, preferably in the exact sciences. Before you can participate in the program, a assessment and selection procedure will take place. We use strict selection criteria to guarantee the required high quality. Excellent grades, motivation, and a design-oriented attitude are crucial, as is an excellent command of the English language.
Difference Between EngD and PhD
If you want to know how technology is applied, an EngD is a good option. However, if you are more interested in (in-depth) research into a specific part of your field, a PhD may be a better fit. The TU/e also offers PhD programs. A PhD is also a post-master's program, but the main difference with a PhD is the focus: a PhD is intended to become an independent researcher, and an EngD prepares you for a high-level position in industry. A PhD program lasts 4 years, while an EngD program lasts 2 years.
Other EngD Programs in the Netherlands
All EngD programs are part of the joint initiative 4TU.SAI: 4TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute. The institute is a collaboration between the 4 technical universities in the Netherlands.
