Program Overview

Introduction to EngD Mechatronic Systems Design

The EngD Mechatronic Systems Design (MSD) is a track within the EngD Automotive Systems Design (ASD) program. It offers a technological designer education at a doctorate level for MSc graduates in fields such as mechatronics, robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, embedded systems, systems & control, applied physics, aerospace engineering, or similar.

Program Details

  • ECTS points: 120
  • Education type: EngD
  • Duration: Two years
  • Language: English
  • Degree: Engineering Doctorate

Program Structure

The program starts with a year of advanced education, followed by a graduation design project of twelve months for industry. For company-EngD trainees, the first year can be performed in a maximum of two years. A company-EngD trainee will perform the graduation design project for the company they are employed by.

Diploma and Certification

Program graduates will be awarded a certified diploma and the degree 'Engineering Doctorate' (EngD). Before September 1, 2022, the title was 'Professional Doctorate in Engineering' (PDEng), which is another title for the same technological designer programs. The program graduates' names will be entered in the EngD register of the Royal Dutch Institute for Engineers (KIVI). This program is recognized as an EngD program by the CCTO, the Dutch certification institute for technological designer programs.

Cooperation with Industry

Besides educating technical talents, the MSD program cooperates with industry. Industry can provide challenging design assignments in the field of high-tech systems. A team of EngD trainees will work on the assignment for about two months. Industry can also provide challenging twelve-month graduation projects. In exchange for a fee, industry will get one of the EngD trainees to work for a whole year on a design assignment at their company, as well as supervision and guidance from TU/e staff.

Admission and Eligibility

There are two options to follow this program:

  1. Apply for a traineeship as a full-time job at TU/e. If hired, the applicant will become a TU/e employee for two years.
  2. In case the applicant is already employed in industry, they can ask for admission for a traineeship. For this, they will need permission from their employer. The program activities will be planned together with the applicant in such a way that they can combine it with their job as much as possible. The maximum duration for this company-EngD traineeship is three years.

Career Opportunities

The MSD program offers career opportunities in various fields, including mechatronics, robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, embedded systems, systems & control, applied physics, aerospace engineering, or similar. Graduates will have the opportunity to work in industry, academia, or research institutions, and will be well-prepared for leadership roles in their chosen field.

Testimonials

The program has received positive testimonials from graduates, including Gijs Linskens EngD, Tom Zwijgers EngD, Aneesh Ashok Kumar, Prof. Maarten Steinbuch, Tim Verdonschot EngD, and Nestor Hernandez Rodriguez EngD. These testimonials highlight the program's strengths and the opportunities it provides for personal and professional growth.
