Introduction to the Diploma de Experto en Acceso Vascular Ecoguiado

The Diploma de Experto en Acceso Vascular Ecoguiado is a specialized program designed for graduates in Nursing or similar fields. This program is of particular interest to professionals whose work involves the care of patients with vascular access devices.

Objectives

The primary objective of this program is to equip participants with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and competencies necessary for the selection, insertion, care, maintenance, identification, and resolution of complications, and removal of different central and peripheral venous access devices.

Specific Objectives:

1. Develop advanced practical training in peripheral and central venous access (peripheral cannula, mini-midline, and midline) and ecoguiado.
2. Foster a critical attitude towards ecoguiado venous access practice.
3. Achieve excellence in patient care and attention for those requiring ecoguiado venous access.
4. Understand international standards, recent evidence, and evidence-based guidelines for safe and effective ecoguiado venous access practice.
5. Acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities related to ultrasound in the field of venous access.
6. Develop competencies for creating, developing, and working in nursing units dedicated to peripheral and central venous access.

• Modality: Hybrid (presential-virtual)
• Duration: From September 2025 to September 2026
• Schedule: First semester: Fridays from 16:00 to 22:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 to 18:00; Second semester: 25 days of clinical practices from 8:00 to 15:00 or from 15:00 to 22:00.

Curriculum

The program consists of modules and practical sessions designed to provide comprehensive training in venous access care.

Modules:

• Module 1: El acceso vascular y sus cuidados (Generalities of Vascular Access and Its Care)
  • Generalidades del AV (6 ECTS)
  • Insercion del AV (3 ECTS)
  • Complicaciones del AV y su abordaje (4 ECTS)
• Module 2: Equipos de terapia intravenosa. Evidencia, innovación y liderazgo (Intravenous Therapy Teams. Evidence, Innovation, and Leadership)
  • Equipos de Terapia intravenosa: Evidencia, innovación y liderazgo (4 ECTS)
• Module of Field Practices, Laboratory, and Clinic
  • Practicas de Campo, Laboratorio y Clinica (7 ECTS)

Competencies

Basic Competencies:

• Analyze clinical situations and make decisions individually and interdisciplinarily.
• Apply problem-solving processes using critical thinking and evidence-based decision-making.
• Understand the general bases of technology, tool, and technique management in venous access insertion and maintenance.
• Structure steps to achieve an objective, distributing material and human resources effectively.

Specific Competencies:

• Recognize different anatomical structures involved in venous access.
• Know the differences between types of venous access devices and apply the correct algorithm for selection.
• Manage venous access devices (insertion, care, maintenance, and removal) according to international recommendations.
• Recognize and act upon complications in patients with venous access devices.
• Implement evidence-based practice in health care for patients with venous access devices.
• Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare colleagues regarding care related to venous access devices.
• Lead high-performance teams, understanding the capabilities of different team members.

Admission and Enrollment

Requirements for Access:

• University degree in Nursing or similar (240 ECTS).
• Experience in caring for patients with vascular access devices.

Specific Admission Requirements:

• Graduates in Nursing (240 ECTS) or similar programs.
• Experience in the care of patients with vascular access devices.

Selection Criteria:

The evaluation committee assesses the documentation presented during pre-enrollment based on the following criteria:

1. Academic record of the access degree (40% of the final valuation).
2. Grades in subjects related to the Expert title and other merits (e.g., English level B1) (20% of the final valuation).
3. Professional profile/trayectoria and motivation of the applicant to take the program (40% of the final valuation).

Participants in the Expert program acquire the necessary competencies to work in vascular access teams in both public and private entities, where there is a growing demand for specialized nurses in the selection, insertion, maintenance, and removal of central and peripheral venous access devices.

Practical Training

The practical training module aims to bring students closer to the assistential reality of professionals working in units related to vascular access. Rotations will cover areas such as:

• Equipo de Terapia Intravenosa
• Servicio PICC-port
• Radiologia intervencionista

Practices will be conducted in collaborating hospitals.
