Introduction to the Diploma of Specialization in Data Protection, Digital Society, and Artificial Intelligence

The Diploma of Specialization in Data Protection, Digital Society, and Artificial Intelligence is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex legal landscape of data protection, digital society, and artificial intelligence. This program is offered by the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (UAM) and is tailored to meet the needs of professionals and individuals interested in this field.

Program Details

Duration and Format

• The program lasts from September 19, 2025, to June 26, 2026.
• It is offered in a presential format, with classes held on Fridays (afternoons) and specific Thursdays.
• The program is taught at the Facultad de Derecho de la UAM.

Credits and Price

• The program is worth 30 ECTS credits.
• The price for the program is 3,500, with the option for a fraccionado payment plan:
  • 1st payment: 1,500
  • 2nd payment: 1,000
  • 3rd payment: 1,000

Number of Places and Scholarships

• The program offers 35 places, with a minimum of 10 students required to start the program.
• 10% of the students who enroll in the program will be eligible for scholarships.

Modules

The program is structured into three main modules:

1. Module 1: Digital Society and Artificial Intelligence
   • The Digitalization of Current Societies: Technological Bases and Governance (6 ECTS, obligatory)
   • Legal Keys to Artificial Intelligence (3 ECTS, obligatory)
2. Module 2: Data Protection
   • Fundamentals and Guiding Principles of Data Protection Regulation (6 ECTS, obligatory)
   • Security in Data Protection, Regulatory Framework of Cybersecurity. Data Protection in Different Sectoral Areas (6 ECTS, obligatory)
3. Module 3: Other Disruptive Digital Technologies. Legal Regime
   • Disruptive Technologies and Data Protection (3 ECTS, obligatory)
4. Final Project
   • Work on a final project (6 ECTS, obligatory)

Competences

Basic Competences

• Demonstrate the ability to argue convincingly on a theoretical issue of medium complexity.
• Demonstrate the ability to resolve practical cases according to current positive law.
• Redact legal documents in an orderly and understandable manner.
• Expose legal arguments orally in public in an orderly and understandable manner.
• Apply knowledge and problem-solving skills in new or little-known environments within broader contexts related to the area of study.
• Integrate knowledge and formulate judgments that include reflections on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.

Specific Competences

• Deepen the understanding of the digitalization of societies, technological bases of digital society, and artificial intelligence.
• Comprehend global issues of technological implication, such as digital geopolitics.
• Study the legal aspects of artificial intelligence.
• Analyze disruptive digital technologies, including their impact on data protection and other legal facets.
• Know the content of the Fundamental Right to data protection and the legal figures and issues regulated by the EU Regulation 2016/679 and the Organic Law 3/2018.
• Elaborate processes for the evaluation of cybersecurity risks.
• Prevent, identify, and respond to security incidents related to compliance with data privacy and protection regulations.

Admission and Enrollment

Requirements for Access

• To access the program, a university degree in Law or having pending no more than 60 ECTS of the Law degree is required.
• University degrees from foreign educational systems are accepted without the need for homologation, provided they demonstrate an equivalent level of training to the corresponding Spanish official university degrees and enable access to postgraduate studies in the country where the degree was issued.

Specific Admission Requirements

• University qualification in Law or having pending no more than 60 ECTS of the Law degree.

Employability

Practices

The teaching is given by specialists of recognized prestige, providing rigorous knowledge in the subject matter, followed by practical workshop sessions where students apply what they have learned. Students of the Diploma of Specialization who also enroll in the Master's in Access to Law at UAM can perform curricular practices in specialized law firms. For students who only take the Diploma of Specialization, practices will be extracurricular.

The Diploma of Specialization facilitates professional outlets in companies, law firms, public administrations, etc., to perform functions of legal advice and consulting in any branch of law specialized in digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and data protection.
