Program Overview


Course Overview

The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and the Escuela Nacional de Conservación, Restauración y Museografía (ENCRyM) of Mexico are coordinating to offer a specialization course in Cultural Heritage: "Restoration of Archaeological Metals" (5th edition).


Objectives of the Course

The course aims to specialize students in the instrumental handling of techniques and procedures applied in the laboratory to intervene and correct the deterioration problems of different types of metals that are part of the Archaeological Heritage, with special emphasis on innovative conservation systems and methodological protocols.


Structure and Content

The program will be developed through:


  • Theoretical-introductory classes (in-person)
  • Practical module (in-person)
  • Project module (non-presential)

Theoretical-Introductory Classes

These classes will cover the principles and concepts of Metal Heritage and its Conservation & Restoration, as well as the historical-archaeological evolution of metals used by ancient cultures.


Practical Module

The practical module will focus on the acquisition of skills in:


  • Analysis of the conservation state of archaeological materials
  • Methodology of intervention and cleaning systems for archaeological materials
  • Restoration treatments and techniques in the laboratory
  • Preventive conservation of archaeological materials

Project Module

Students will work on a proposal for intervention on an archaeological metal piece, including technological, research, restoration, and conservation aspects, as well as a preventive maintenance protocol.


Evaluation Criteria

Evaluation will be based on:


  • Attendance and participation in theoretical classes: 5%
  • Laboratory practicum: 50%
  • Final work report and project: 35%
  • Final exam of theoretical component: 10%

Conditions of Access and Number of Places Offered

  • All students must have a degree or license in Conservation and Restoration, History (specializing in Prehistory and Archaeology), or other related fields.
  • The selection of students will be based on their academic and professional record.
  • There are 20 places available, with a minimum of 10 students required to impart the course.

Scholarships and Selection Criteria

  • 4 scholarships of 50% of tuition fees will be offered.
  • Selection criteria include the evaluation of basic training merits (academic record) and other complementary training or experience merits.

  • Calendar: June 1 to September 30, 2015
  • Schedule: 9:00-14:00 hours
