Program Overview
Program Description
The Doctoral Program in Organic Chemistry allows students to acquire a broad range of knowledge in this discipline, particularly in the various sub-areas related to the research lines and groups that make up the program. These groups have specific strengths in organic synthesis, structural characterization, medicinal and biological chemistry, organometallic chemistry, computational and theoretical chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, materials, and nanoscience.
Objective
The primary objective of the program is the development of a research project under the supervision of research groups with significant national and international impact in the area of Organic Chemistry. These groups belong to the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) or to participating research institutions such as the CSIC and IMDEA.
Admission Requirements
- The program does not have specific additional requirements.
- Recommended Profile 1: Students with a degree or license in the branch of sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, environment, physics, chemical engineering, food science, and a master's degree in Organic Chemistry.
- Profile 2: Students who have taken other studies different from those indicated in Profile 1, especially other research-oriented master's degrees in the area of Chemistry.
- No specific level of English proficiency is required.
Complements of Formation
When the student does not possess sufficient knowledge of Organic Chemistry due to not having taken a subject of this nature in their degree or license studies, they may be required to take complementary training. The Academic Commission will evaluate the thesis work to be developed and, based on this and the student's training, will indicate the number of credits to be taken in two of the subjects of Module 1 of the Master's in Organic Chemistry, which in no case should exceed 12 credits.
Admission Criteria
The Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program in Organic Chemistry will analyze admission applications, evaluating the following aspects and merits with the indicated weighting:
- The grades obtained by the candidate in the degree and/or master's degree they have completed (75%).
- The candidate's CV, evaluating supplementary activities related to Chemistry (15%).
- Publications derived from the master's thesis (10%).
Planification
Activities
From their enrollment, doctoral students must register all activities carried out in an individualized document generated in the UAM's academic management system (SIGMA). This document will be evaluated annually by the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program.
Specific Activities
The program includes the following activities:
- Attendance at seminars and research conferences (obligatory).
- Attendance at a specialized course (optional).
- Presentation of works at national or international scientific congresses (obligatory).
- Elaboration of publishable works in scientific journals (optional).
- Research stays in foreign or Spanish centers (optional).
- Preparation and presentation of formal seminars (obligatory).
Thesis Doctoral
The program does not require specific requirements for the thesis doctoral. Procedures related to the thesis doctoral can be consulted through the provided link.
Quality Assurance
Commission of Quality
The Commission of Quality is composed of:
- President: Gema De la Torre Ponce (UAM).
- Secretary: Elena Bu雝el Magdalena (UAM).
- Vocal: Andres De la Escosura Navazo (UAM).
- Representative of doctoral students: Ainhoa Salazar Pollo (UAM).
- Representative of PTGAS: Beatriz Souto Perez (UAM).
Actions for Improvement
The program has established several actions for improvement, including:
- Evaluating the adequacy of candidate applications to the program's research lines.
- Modifying the procedure for evaluating doctoral students with non-homologated titles.
- Establishing rubrics for annual evaluation with feedback to those involved.
- Planning specific training actions for doctoral students.
Results
Indicators

Satisfaction
The latest report on satisfaction surveys of the EDUAM can be consulted through the provided link.
Labor Insertion
The UAM has an Employment Observatory that collects, analyzes, and provides information on the employability and labor insertion process of its graduates. The Observatory prepares annual aggregated reports by branches, and only if more than 10 responses are received, individual reports are made for the Doctoral Program. When the number of responses is less than 10, the results are shown aggregated in the branch reports.
