Program Overview

CILT Design Studio

The CILT Design Studio is a six-week online process created to assist teaching staff at the University of Cape Town (UCT) who are designing or redesigning their courses and course sites for blended and online contexts.

Course Overview

During the Design Studio, participants will undertake a series of activities to refine the design of their course and translate this into a course site. By the end of the studio, participants will have:

  • Shared a course outline/syllabus on their site.
  • Created a suitable welcome module – including a welcome video/audio, course outline/syllabus, and welcome activity.
  • Created their site filing system and a module template with basic instructional text.
  • Developed and shared an assessment plan, and assessment briefs and rubrics/memos.

Participant Requirements

Participants will work in UCT's new digital learning platform, Amathuba, and through institutionally-supported tools, which provides experience and opportunity to use various tools and design options.

  • Attend the weekly sprint sessions.
  • Log onto the Design Studio site, on Amathuba, and work through the asynchronous activities for the module (approximately 3 hours, flexible during the week).

Certification

Participants can earn a UCT short course certificate for Design Studio if they complete the course and the key outputs.

Participant Feedback

The Design Studio has received positive feedback from participants, who have found it to be a comprehensive and structured course that covers all aspects of teaching in higher education.

Self-Paced Design Studio

A self-paced, self-study Design Studio is also available for participants who prefer to work at their own pace. This course focuses on four aspects of course design: Context, course mapping, assessment, and course content creation. Participants can work through all four topics or identify sections to complete to best suit their requirements. The self-paced course is hosted on both Amathuba and Vula.

Eligibility

The self-paced course is only available to UCT staff and students. External participants, including organisations and other universities, are not eligible to join.

Acknowledgement
