Basic Training in ICD-10 Coding Course Details
Course Overview
The Basic Training in ICD-10 Coding course is aimed at Clinical Coders and Case Managers, as well as those seeking a career in Clinical Coding or Case Management.
Entry Requirements
The minimum requirement for entry into this course is a Grade 12 Certificate.
Course Content

- Legal requirements regarding ICD-10
- Benefits and Uses of ICD-10
- Structure and Principles of ICD-10
- Volumes 1, 2 & 3
- 3, 4, and 5 Character Coding
- Variable Axis Classification
- Basic rules and conventions
- Dagger and asterisk coding
- Sequelae coding
- Coding of injuries / poisoning and external causes
- MDR TB coding
- Coding of infections
- Accuracy in coding
- Selection of primary and secondary diagnosis
- Basic practical applications (coding of single conditions and application of dual coding rule)

Course Format
The course is available in two formats:
- Live Lectures via MS Teams: This format requires attendance at scheduled lectures.
- Distance Learning / E-Learning: This format allows for self-study and completion of the course at the participant's own pace.
Assessment and Certification
A digital certificate of completion will be issued to participants upon successful completion of the course.
Course Fee and Payment
The course fee is R 7,910. Payment terms vary depending on the course format selected. For live lectures, payment is due in full two weeks before the training commences. For distance learning, payment is due in full at least 48 hours before the start date. No payment plans are available.
