Fundamentals of Emergency Care Course Details

Course Overview

The Fundamentals of Emergency Care short course revises important fundamental topics and principles required for anyone working in emergency centers or dealing with occasional emergency presentations. The course gives a structured approach to emergencies, with a focus on resuscitation in the first hours, practical skills, and teamwork.


Course Content

  • Cardiac arrest algorithms (2015)
  • Advanced airway management (intubation, rapid sequence intubation, and the difficult airway)
  • Surgical airway (cricothyroidotomy - needle and surgical)
  • Ventilation
  • Paediatric Resuscitation (Intra-osseous insertion and fluid management)
  • ECD recognition
  • Tachy-arrhythmias and cardioversion
  • Brady-arrhythmias and pacing
  • Intercostal drain insertion
  • Venous access
  • Triage and disaster planning

Entry Requirements

The course is aimed at doctors, nursing sisters, and paramedics involved in providing emergency care to patients. The course is open to qualified medical doctors, registered nursing sisters, and ECP qualified paramedics. Other qualifications with suitable experience may be considered, but preference will be given to the above.


Assessment

A multiple-choice entry exam is held at the start of the course. The course manual/course material for the exam will be provided to registered participants.


Certification

A digital certificate of completion and CPD points will be issued to participants on successful completion of the course.
